Day 11 through 13 Brazil 2024

Pousada Pouso Alegre

We start our journey back northward along the Transpantanerira through open savannahs and wetlands with occasional forest islands. We make frequent stops to photograph things of interest. We arrive at our last lodge, which is the most primitive, but it provides significant photo ops, particularly birds and a number of interesting mammals as well as more crocodiles. The main event at this location is birds though in walking distance from the lodge.

One of the prettiest and interesting birds at this location is the Toco Toucan.

There were interesting and unusual mammals as well .

And of course the most prevalent reptile the Caiman. Along the rivers and ponds they were everywhere, sunning themselves sometime with mouths open, we observed a female with her brood in a pond and a number of adults in a pond showing off their vocal skills resulting in a vibration pattern on the surface.

All good things must come to an end, so we photographed our last sunset and the next morning undertook the five hour drive back to Cuiaba.

We stop at a roadside fruit stand then make one last stop for lunch together at a  churrasqueira, South American barbeque on skewers.

A good group of avid explorer’s, checked in to the hotel and then head back home, in my case on a 4:00 AM flight, and 23 hours later I fall asleep in my own bed. It was a great adventure and I will be sorting through images for the next few months, hopefully to publish a book of the best by Christmas.
