The Douro Valley

Quinta Casa Amarela

Our last day included a visit to a vineyard that was established in 1885, which is located only thirty minutes from our Hotel. We were hosted by Gil Regueiro who is the seventh generation scion who manages the Winery, a small hotel and conducts private tours. The vineyard spreads over 86 acres on two facing hillsides and in addition to the hotel and winery includes the original family home. As was the case with the larger winery we visited all grapes are picked by hand and crushed by feet in the traditional manner.

After the tour of the vineyard and blending room Gil escorted us into the family home to the dining room for a lovely lunch. We enjoyed a variety of outstanding wines with lunch capped off by a fine Port. We captured a photo with our host before departing. Gil was a charming host and reinforced the incredible hospitality and warmth extended to us during our Portugal experience.

Back at our hotel we relaxed and enjoyed the amenities of the Sixth Senses, had our last dinner and packed for our return to the United States. Leaving from the hotel at 8:00 AM the next morning we were driven back down the Douro Valley to the Porto Airport. We flew directly to Newark, then on to Savannah, and then by Limo back to Hilton Head. At 12:00 AM we crawled into bed, tired but very satisfied after an incredible Portugal experience.
